Figurative Photography

The act of making a photograph is a subjective process of intuitive visual discovery careening toward an often unknown end.

The same qualities of landscape―sweep of curve and contrasts between textures―are present in the body of a woman.  Embodied in silky-smooth skin are arcing contours of glowing light.

A dynamic nude creates an atmosphere of excitement, anticipation, and fear electrified by natural sexual tension. Someone eager to mold her body into an expressive gesture can experience not only curiosity and anticipation, but also a feeling of vulnerability and hesitation.  Overcoming self-consciousness while appearing nude in front of an another person evolves over time.  It requires trust and a belief that the qualities of form and gesture the photographer seeks are worth making oneself emotionally vulnerable.

Model and artist walk along the edge of possibility, merging body pose with artistic vision.  Her body and spirit  uniquely contribute to a story worth seeing.  In so doing the photographer celebrates the uniqueness of the model's body personality.  They become poised in a dance to capture a fleeting moment in time and place.  In no other experience does opportunity favor a prepared mind and eager body receptive to the sensuous possibilities.

I'm curious about how things are. Why are weathered, older mountains more beautiful than ragged, newer ones? Why is deep shadow so mysterious and inviting?

Process is the "How" about things. Deciding how to interpret a photograph once out of the camera thrills me. It leads me beyond curiosity on the way to satisfaction, that is, to the final photograph. It provides the "Ah-Ha" of a "high touch" activity. Watching a beautiful print slowly emerge from the developer in darkness is ecstasy; waiting for a finished photograph to come out of the printer is the next best thing.

No subject has ever caused me hesitation. Every thing has intrinsic beauty. My challenge is to find and portray it in favorable light. To see what it looks like in different lighting, viewed from a different direction, or wondering how to make the final print complement the subject. Every photograph becomes a reflection of the world around me.
